Business Skills development

Just over 4 years ago I was out of work for a while. Whilst I was defacto staying at home looking after my daughter, I didn’t accept the role happily. I went off and studied part time for a few years and started up my own business. And all the while I was on the hunt for a new permanent job.

While some now accept a man’s decision to take time and raise his kids, we’re all to familiar with how rare these people are regardless of their sex. Even though I was studying a Masters degree while looking after firstly Aoife and then Aidan, I was nearly always asked “So what have you been doing since you were last employed?” The almost dismissive response to my answers showed how little people value the time we spend with our children when it comes to benefiting our careers or business skills.

While I’m not actively looking for work now, I have decided that this time around that when I do look for work in a few years I’ll be prepared. As well as looking at what I am interested in and identifying what I will do (https://beingaoifesdad.wordpress.com/2014/02/25/life-after-childcare/). I also thought it would be interesting to look at what work/business skills we can develop while raising our children.

So over the next few weeks I’ll publish a few posts on the different skills that I think we develop, and the rest is up to us to convince potential employers that time spent at home raising kids has proved a benefit to them, not just to our children.
